Two Days in Philly – blogged by Molly Patten

Philly has a lot to offer when it comes to sights-to-see, culture and food!

Last October, my husband and I traveled to Pennsylvania for a wedding.  The wedding was in upstate PA in a small town called New Hope about an hour north of Philadelphia.  Neither of us had ever been to Philly before so we knew that traveling all the way from CA to PA we would want to spend some time in the city before heading north.  Through our awesome World Travel agent Heidi Nanigian, we were booked at a hotel just steps from the City Hall building in downtown Philadelphia.  The location of this hotel was just perfect.  We could walk to many museums, restaurants, historical sites, and parks.  We spent the first day walking around the city and discovered some great local bars and shops.  Of course we also had to taste an authentic cheesesteak, so we hopped in an Uber and took ourselves on a self-guided tour of some of the most famous cheesesteak restaurants.  We tried Pat’s, Geno’s, Ishkabibble’s, Jim’s, and DiNic’s.  We agreed that Jims was probably the best of the ones we tried, but I think we’ll have to go back and try a few more before officially declaring a winner.  The next day we went down to the historical area to see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and take the Hop On – Hop Off double decker bus tour.  This was a great way to get around while getting an entertaining overview of the city.  We’ve done similar tours in other cities we’ve traveled to and really love them.  The tour guides are always funny and give great suggestions.  One of the recommendations our guide made was instead of spending nearly $15 to go to the observation deck on the One Liberty building, to go next door to the R2L Lounge for happy hour and spend that $15 on a cocktail while enjoying the same view of the city.  This was such a great idea and we’re glad we took her advice.  Traveling to Philadelphia without any expectations or concrete plans allowed us the freedom to wander and discover fun places along the way.  This was such a fun trip and a great city.  We definitely want to go back again soon!
